What is compensatory education?
positive discrimination
educational policies designed to improve the achievement of the working class by providing extra resources to individuals, schools and communities in deprived areas.
Scholarships
a financial award given to students to help pay for their education. they are usually given to students who have achieved something e.g. high grades
they help students save money for their studies and act as a motivation meaning more working class children progress onto higher education.
weaknesses; complex application process as they are demanding competitive and lengthy. insufficient financial support as some only cover a small portion of tuition fees
Sure start centres
community based services that support families with young children by offering services such as health and family support, early learning and childcare
they decrease deprivation by offering these services to families with young children in deprived areas e.g. health checks early education parenting support.
strength; improves educational attainment studies show positive impacts on children school readiness
weakness; some studies found they didn’t help most deprived families
free school meals
healthy meals provided to children in need at school
they provide children from low income families access to a nutritious meal which can improve health concentration and academic performance while alleviating the financial burden on families
weaknesses; some children may feel stigmatise day receiving fsm. limited choice which may lead to less healthy selections. to keep costs down fsm might not always provide the healthiest options
