Survey
A method of collecting information by asking questions or measuring characteristics of a set of items or people.
Tally Mark
A quick mark (often a vertical stroke) used to record each occurrence of a data value while counting.
Frequency
The number of times a particular data value or category occurs in a data set.
Tally and Frequency Table
A simple table that uses tally marks and numerical counts to record and summarize survey results.
Grouped Frequency Table
A frequency table in which numerical data are placed into non-overlapping intervals (groups) so that no data item can appear in two groups.
Ungrouped Data
Raw data listed individually, not placed into intervals or classes.
Pictogram
A visual display that uses repeated pictures or icons to represent the frequency of each category.
Bar Graph (Bar Diagram)
A common chart that uses separate rectangular bars to show the frequency of different categories or values.
Bar Line Graph
A graph in which vertical or horizontal lines (rather than filled bars) are drawn to heights proportional to the frequencies.
Pie Chart
A circular graph divided into slices, where each slice’s angle (or area) represents the frequency as a fraction of the total.
Frequency Distribution
A systematic listing or graph showing each possible value (or group of values) and its corresponding frequency.
Data Dissemination
The process of organizing, summarizing, and presenting survey information for others to understand and use.
Interval (Class)
A continuous span of values used in a grouped frequency table to categorize numerical data.
Scale (Graph)
The set of equally spaced values along an axis used to measure frequencies or data values in a graph.
Category
A distinct group or label used to classify qualitative or discrete quantitative data in tables and graphs.
