Lipid
Crush up sample with pestle and mortar, add ethanol to dissolve then water, shake to mix. Positive if milky-white emulsion forms
Proteins
Add Biurets. Positive if changes from blue-black to purple
Reducing sugar
Add Benedict’s solution and heat. Positive if changes from blue to brick red/yellow/green.
Non-reducing sugar
Add Benedict’s solution and heat. Should stay negative. Then boil with acid and neutralise with alkali. Heat with Benedict’s solution. Positive if changes blue to red/orange
