the middle passage was the route in which slaves were forced to travel from Africa to the West Indies. They were crammed into the ships, it was highly unsanitary, many died of disease, starvation, or abuse

the pilgrims first winter in 1620 was harsh and many died. the fall of 1621, the Wampanoag ppl, esp. Squanto, taught the settlers how to plant crops and adapt. In 1621 they shared a harvest to celebrate the successful growing season and thank God.
