What does the Elements and Principles of Design mean?

  • Because all design is subjective, there needs to be criteria on which to evaluate and create it.

  • It allows us to do so while using a shared, objective terminology.

Elements of Design: Point

A single position in a space or surface without length or width

Elements of Design: Line

A one dimensional stroke that is greater in length than width.

  • Lines provide graphic order.

  • A horizontal line can bring a sense of calm and stability.

  • A vertical line is more formal and usually provides visual balance.

  • Lines can provide movement and can be straight, angled, curved, wavy, and organic.

  • Has the properties of length, direction, and position. Can be thick, thin, segmented, dashed, or dotted.

Elements of Design: Shape and Plane

A plane is a closed line that creates a shape. It is two dimensional and expresses length and width with hardly any depth.

  • Shapes can be geometric, like circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares, or they can be free formed and organic like amoebas.

  • Certain shapes have meanings. A circle typically indicates unity, and a triangle for stability. Whereas a square has a more formal quality.

  • Shapes have the proportions of orientation and a position within a composition or space.
