Columbian Exchange
The transfer of plants, animals, culture, and diseases between the Old and New Worlds.Decimated Native populations (smallpox) but fueled European population growth (maize/potatoes).
Encomienda System
Spanish system of rewarding settlers with Native labor.Essentially a form of slavery; led to the "Black Legend" and debates over Native rights.
Requerimiento
A Spanish legal document read to Natives demanding they submit to the Church/Crown.Used to "justify" the conquest and use of force against non-Christians.
Jamestown (1607)
The first permanent English settlement in North America.Introduced tobacco as a cash crop, leading to a need for labor (indentured servants, then slaves).
Bacon’s Rebellion
1676 uprising of poor western farmers against the VA governor.Led to the transition from indentured servitude to African chattel slavery to prevent future class revolts.
Metacom’s War
1675–1678 conflict between Wampanoags and New Englanders.Effectively ended significant Native resistance in New England.
Great Awakening
1730s–40s religious revival (George Whitefield/Jonathan Edwards).Challenged traditional authority; first "mass movement" in the colonies.
Mercantilism
Economic policy where colonies exist to benefit the Mother Country.Led to the Navigation Acts and eventual friction over trade restrictions.
Proclamation Line (1763)
British law forbidding settlement west of the Appalachians.Angered colonists who fought for that land, beginning the rift with Britain.
Common Sense (1776)
Thomas Paine's pamphlet arguing for independence.Shifted public opinion from "reconciling with Britain" to "independence is common sense."
Northwest Ordinance
Law for admitting new states and banning slavery in the NW Territory.One of the few successes of the Articles of Confederation; set a precedent for banning slavery.
Shays’ Rebellion
1786 uprising of debt-ridden MA farmers.Exposed the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation; led to the Constitutional Convention.
Whiskey Rebellion
1794 protest against excise taxes; crushed by Washington.Demonstrated that the new Constitution was strong enough to enforce federal law.
Alien & Sedition Acts
Laws passed by Adams to silence political critics (Democratic-Republicans).Led to the VA and KY Resolutions and the theory of Nullification.
Marbury v. Madison
1803 Supreme Court case under John Marshall.Established Judicial Review, giving the Court power to declare laws unconstitutional.
Missouri Compromise
1820 deal: MO enters as slave state, ME as free; 36°30' line.Temporarily quieted sectional tensions but highlighted the growing divide over slavery.
Market Revolution
Transition from subsistence farming to large-scale commercial manufacturing.Linked the North and West via canals/railroads; changed gender roles (Cult of Domesticity).
Monroe Doctrine
US policy warning Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere.Asserted US dominance in the Americas for decades to come.
Nullification Crisis
SC (led by Calhoun) threatened to secede over "Tariff of Abominations."Tested federal power vs. states' rights; a "preview" of the Civil War.
2nd Great Awakening
Religious revival sparking reform movements (1820s-40s).Inspired Abolitionism, Temperance, and Women’s Rights (Seneca Falls).
