what is an independent variable?
the factor/s you are manipulating or changing in the experiment to study their effect
what is a dependent variable?
the factor/s that change due to the manipulation of the independent variable
what is a controlled variable?
a factor that is kept constant during the experiment
what is an extraneous variable?
a factor that is not kept constant or accounted for in the experiment
what makes an experiment valid?
if it is measuring what it sets out to measure
what is a control group?
a group that doesn’t receive any level of the IV and are used as a baseline set of data to compare the other results to
what are the two kinds of control group?
negative control (a group that receives no treatment and is used to establish what would happen in the absence of the IV)
positive control (a group that receives a known and effective treatment, used to ensure the experiment produces positive results)
how can you increase the validity of an expeirment?
minmising extraneous variables, ensuring reliable measurement techniques and maximising control over the IV
