Federalism
A system of government authority shared by national and local governments.
Unitary System
A system of government where virtually all power resides in the central government.
Federal Aid
Financial assistance provided by the federal government to state and local governments for specific projects or programs.
Constitutional Limits
The restrictions placed on the powers of the federal government and the scope of state and local authority as defined by the U.S. Constitution.
Political Culture
The set of attitudes, beliefs, and sentiments that give order and meaning to a political process.
Social Welfare
Government programs designed to improve the quality of life for its citizens, often funded through federal aid.
Conditions of Aid
Specific requirements imposed by the federal government that states must follow to receive federal funding.
New Federalism
A political philosophy that aims to shift responsibilities back to state governments from the federal government.
Federal Mandates
Edicts from the federal government requiring state and local governments to implement certain policies.
Backlash
A strong adverse reaction or response to government actions or policies, especially seen in the context of federal aid and mandates.
