Paralegal
A person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.
Substantive Law
The law that defines rights and duties of individuals, outlining punishments for violations, as contained in statutes.
Procedural Law
The law that establishes how to enforce rights and how a case proceeds through the courts, essentially the 'how-to' of substantive law.
Ethics
Standards of conduct that govern the behavior of a professional, which in the case of paralegals, align with those of attorneys.
Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
A process of continued professional development required for paralegals and attorneys to maintain their knowledge and skills in the legal field.
Jurisdiction
The authority or power of a court to administer justice in a lawsuit; can be personal or subject-matter jurisdiction.
Billable Hours
The hours that can be charged to a client for services rendered, as opposed to non-billable tasks which are not charged.
American Bar Association (ABA)
A professional organization that defines and regulates the role and responsibilities of the legal profession, including paralegals.
Chain of Command
The hierarchical structure within an organization, including law firms, that defines roles and responsibilities among staff.
Virtual Clients File
A collection of case scenarios used in educational programs for students to apply legal skills and knowledge in practical assignments.
