Five Stages of the Listening Process
Receiving, Understanding, Evaluating, Remembering, Responding
Degrees of Active Listening
Repeating, Paraphrasing, Reflecting
Receiving Stage
hearing then attending; the sounds we hear have no meaning until we give them their meaning in context
Understanding Stage
first step in the listening process; understand what the lecturer is proving or whether what you’re hearing at the moment is the main point, side note, or digression
Evaluation Stage
listener assesses the information; allows the listener to form an opinion of what they heard and, if necessary, to begin developing a response
Remembering Stage
categorizes and retains the information gathered from the speaker for future access
Responding Stage
provides verbal and/or nonverbal reactions based on short- or long-term memory; adds action to the listening process
Learning Cycle
Preparing, Absorbing, Capturing, Reviewing
Repeating
degree of active listening; repeating the message using exactly the same words used by the speaker
Paraphrasing
degree of active listening; rendering the message using similar words and similar phrase arrangement to the ones used by the speaker
Reflecting
degree of active listening; rendering the message using your own words and sentence structure
