Moons and Tides

Axis

• imaginary line by which the earth spins

• the earth is tilted 23.5 degrees on its axis

• vertical line

Rotate (rotation)

• the spinning of the earth on its axis

Revolve (revolution)

• movement of a body around another body such as the earth to the moon and vice versa

• it takes 27 or 27.5 days for the moon to revolve around the earth

Orbit

• imaginary path of a revolving body such as the orbit of the earth around the sun and the orbit of the moon around the earth

• it takes 365 days for the earth to orbit the sun (365 ¼ if leap year)

• elliptical line

Gravity (gravitational force)

• non-contact force (do not have to be in contact to feel the force)

• causes objects to fall towards the ground or center of the earth

• the moon keeps on revolving around the earth due to earth’s gravity, the moon must circle the earth in a curved route because of the constant inward pull of earth’s gravity

• the moon serves as a natural satellite because it has a rocky surface with craters, valleys, mountain, and flat surfaces, no water and air and ¼ the size of earth, no light and sunlight is reflected from the moon to the earth

• keeps the earth, moon, and sun’s function in the solar system

• one side of the earth consistently face the sun while the other side face away, representing daytime and nighttime on earth

• as the earth orbit the sun with the moon, different parts of the moon will be lit by the sun, sunlight will hit different parts of the earth which is why we have phases of the moon

• earth’s gravity = 9.8 m/s 2

• moon’s gravity = 1.65 m/s 2

• not visible at all

• moon is directly between the earth and sun

Waxing Crescent

• small silver that creates a crescent shape

• illuminated part is on the right side

First Quater (waxing quarter)

• half of the moon is visible

• right side is illuminated

Waxing Gibbous

• more than half is visible

• right side is illuminated

Full Moon

• the entire moons is visible

Waning Gibbous

• more than half is still visible

• the dark side creates a crescent

• left side is illuminated

Last Quarter (waning quarter)

• only half is visible

• left side is illuminated

Waning Cresent

• only a small silver is visible

• left side is illuminated

Tides

• cause by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earth’s water

• periodic rise and fall of the surface of the ocean every 12 ½ hours

High Tide

• highest point by which the water rises

• earth is directly below the moon and same with the opposite side

Low Tide

• lowest point by which water descends

• earth is not directly below the moon and same with the opposite side

Neap Tide

• moon and the sun are at a right angle and is weak

• weakest tide (low high tide, high low tide)

Spring Tide

• highest and lowest tide of the month

• moon and sun is lined up with the earth causing the strongest pull of the water

• twice a month

• full moon and new moon

Filipino Superstitions and Beliefs

• full moon causes strange behaviour on people and animals

• new moon can bring bad luck

• high tide during a full moon can lead to more accidents at sea

• waning gibbous brings decrease and decay

• Haverts are better when planted during a waxing moon
