Common Sense
A pamphlet published by Thomas Paine in 1776 that argued for independence from Great Britain and criticized the monarchy.
Declaration of Independence
A formal statement adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, declaring the colonies' freedom from Britain.
Independence
The state of being free from external control or influence; self-governance.
Natural Rights
The idea that all people are born with certain rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Petition
A formal written request made to an authority, particularly to the government.
Patriot
A colonist who supported independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution.
Loyalist
A colonist who remained loyal to Great Britain and opposed independence during the American Revolution.

A convention of delegates from the thirteen colonies that met from 1775 to 1781, during which the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
