Cell Division

process in which a cell divides into two new cells.

2
New cards

What is reason 1 for why cells need to divide?

living things grow by producing more cells and not because cells grow in size.

3
New cards

What is reason 2 for why cells need to divide?

repair of damaged tissue

4
New cards

What is reason 3 for why cells need to divide?

if a cell gets too big, it can’t get enough nutrients into the cell and waste out of the cell because the cell’s volume increases at a faster rate than the surface area, which is the cell membrane.

This is a disadvantage because when we have smaller cell membrane compared to the volume, the membrane cannot keep up with the cell’s demands.

What is mitosis?

a form of sexual reproduction in which the two ne cells produced are genetically identical to the original cell (parent cell)

6
New cards

What is binary fusion?

mitosis in bacteria

7
New cards

How does cell division work in prokaryotes?

bacteria reproduces asexually by binary fusion.
