Sonnet
A type of subjective poetry with a fixed structure of 14 lines.
Petrarchan Sonnet
A sonnet form originating from the Italian poet Petrarch, consisting of an octave and a sestet.
Octave
The first eight lines of a Petrarchan sonnet, following the rhyme scheme 'abba abba'.
Sestet
The last six lines of a Petrarchan sonnet that follow the octave and typically vary in rhyme scheme.
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of rhymes in a poem; in Petrarchan sonnets, it is fixed for the octave as 'abba abba'.
Tercet
A set of three lines of verse, often used in the sestet of a sonnet.
Miltonic Model
A variation of the Petrarchan sonnet used by Milton, known for its variations in the sestet.
Syllable Count
Each line of a Petrarchan sonnet consists of eleven syllables.
Laura
The lady love for whom Petrarch wrote his sonnets.
Couplet
A stanza of two lines; not permitted in the sestet of a Petrarchan sonnet.
