Mendelian Inheritance
Inheritance of a single gene with two alleles, involving dominant and recessive alleles.
Phenotype
Observed characteristic that is expressed and can be measured.
Genotype
The DNA variants responsible for the expression of the phenotype; the genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Co-dominance
Occurs when both parental phenotypes are expressed in the offspring.
Incomplete dominance
Occurs when a dominant allele does not completely mask the effects of a recessive allele, resulting in a blending of both phenotypes.
Heritability (h2)
The proportion of variability within a population attributed to inherited genetic factors.
Single Trait Selection
A method of selection that results in rapid progress but is least adapted to environmental conditions.
Multiple Trait Selection
A method that considers more traits, resulting in slower progress but better accommodation for sub-optimal environmental conditions.
Progeny Testing
A method that evaluates the genetic potential of parents based on the performance of their offspring.
Broiler Breeder Paradox
The phenomenon where genetics for growth leads to poorer reproductive performance due to energy allocation.
Crossbreeding
A method used to increase genetic diversity by combining different pure breed lines.
Health and Behavior Problems
Issues that arise when layers are placed in environments unsuitable for their upbringing, leading to aggression and other negative traits.
