Parasympathetic response
The rest-and-digest branch of the autonomic nervous system, mediated by acetylcholine at parasympathetic targets.
Acetylcholine
Neurotransmitter used by the parasympathetic nervous system; activates muscarinic and nicotinic receptors.
Acetylcholinesterase
Enzyme that rapidly breaks down acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft, terminating cholinergic signaling.
Cholinergic agents
Drugs that mimic or enhance acetylcholine at cholinergic receptors, directly or indirectly.
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
Drugs that inhibit acetylcholinesterase, increasing acetylcholine levels and prolonging cholinergic effects.
Inhibit the parasympathetic response
Pharmacologic effect where parasympathetic activity is reduced; can involve receptor blockade or decreased acetylcholine action.
