introduction

There’s been an ongoing debate about the best way to govern Scotland. There are multiple options such as Independence, Federalism and Devo-Max. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, although they could all be successful alternatives. The best option for the governance of Scotland is Independence.

Section 1

One alternative to the governance of Scotland is Independsnce.

3
New cards

Independence expand 1

If independence were to govern Scotland would be able to be fully in control over all their issues without any influence from the westminster. If we were independent the scottish government could have used the £200 million pounds spent on nuclear weapons on the civilians health, education or poverty in Scotland. Even After Brexit and leaving the Eu, people still want independence.

4

Independence Example 1

For example, In scotland 62% of people wanted to stay in the Eu, However since England and Wales have a higher population more people wanted to leave, with these votes combined, Scotland was dragged out the Eu.

Independence Analysis 1

Therefore, Independance would be a good alternative to Scotland as we can make our own choice with future elections without having to worry about england or wales larger population and the civilians get choose the option that they want, independance would also be able to give the government more flexibility as there choices on how to run the country isn’t passed through to westminster.

Independence rebuttle

How ever, on the other hand there are many drawbacks to independence that would suggest it’s not the best idea for Scotland. Many people think that Scotland would be better off to stay in the UK, to allow all of them to work as a team with the other nations of the UK.

7
New cards

independence explain 2

Supporters of the union argue that if a crisis happens that the nations will help each other and will be able to financially support each other and if we end up going to war they will have each others backs and will defend us.

8
New cards

independence example 2

For example Boris Johnson argued that because of the financial power of being in the united kingdom that it helped protect people’s jobs during the pandemic.

9

independence analysts 2

Therefore, independence may not be the best choice as we may be put in a situation where we meet support and since we have already left the EU because of brexit, we do need support incase anything happens. Although this is not the only option for the governance of Scotland.

10
New cards

introduction 2

Another possible alternative for Scotland is Devo-Max.

11
New cards

devo max explain 1

If devo-max was to govern Scotland, Scotland would receive more devolved powers. This means that the scottish government would have more say on what happens here and would be equipped to respond to civilians.

12
New cards

devo max example 1

For example, a YouGov poll in 2023 showed that Scottish people prefer Devo-max over independence as 42% said they wanted more powers and 36% said they wanted full independence.

13
New cards

devo max analyst 1

Therefore, devo-max is a good option because Scotland will be able to make more decisions on topics like education and health and will still be able to receive the financial benefit from being in the union.

14
New cards

devo max rebuttle

However, Devo-Max has many downsides that suggests it’s not a good alternative. This is because Scotland would have to raise taxes by a large price, if this happened it could put civilians under financial strain and could cause people to leave scotland which could lead to major economic damages to the country. Businesses may have to be shut down and more civilians will have to struggle living from paycheck to paycheck.

15
New cards

devi max example 2

For example, according to the UK parliament it shows that Scotland has 17% more per person spent on it than the rest of the uk.

16
New cards

devo max analyst 1

Therefore, Devo max is not the best alternative for scotlands governance as it could increase the current social and economic issues which could lead to Scotland as a country becoming poorer, a rise in inequality and continued under representation in the UK. There is one more option to govern scotland and that is Federlism.

17
New cards

introduction 3

A final possible alternative for the governance of Scotland is Federlism,

18
New cards

Federlism explain 1

This alternative would make the UK split into different regions. They would all have their own separate government which would have their own state government which would be able to make their own laws and decisions within the areas that they control. This means that Scotland would have more of a say in the UK and decisions like brexit could’ve been diffrent.

19
New cards

Federlism example 1

There are growing groups of people in england and wales who halos suooort more self-government for their regions, such as the group “yorkshire first”

20
New cards

federlism analysts 1

Therefore, a federalised government could be a good alternative as each part of the uk can be equally represented and each part of the union can have their own say in what does and doesn’t happen.

21
New cards

federalism rebuttle

However federalism may not be the best option as many issues have been raised at the likelihood of it being implemented. This is because although some civilians in England support this idea, the people in power do not. They have rejected previous proposals to give more powers to local regions. So federalism is an option that may be near to impossible to obtain.

22
New cards

federalism example 2

For example, the lib dem are the only party to support federalism because their party shooort isn’t large enough for it to win in a election.

23
New cards

federalism analysts 2

Therefore, federalism isn’t a good alternative as it’s poorly understood and has little party or public support. It would also take a long time to get implemented because of how complex it would be.

Final Conclusion!!

In conclusion, The best option for the governance of scotland is Independence. Comparing independence to the other options discussed it is the safest option for scotland that would also be the most likely to be implemented. In the long run, independence will most likely let scotland thrive as a country better than the other two as it could lead scotland into a financial issue. Overall Independence would be the most successful and effective way to govern Scotland
