Cell
Basic unit for/of life
Cell wall
Supports cell structure, provides protection
Cell membrane - plasma membrane
controls the movement of substances in and out the cell, consists of lipid bilayer that is semi-permeable.
Nucleus
Contains genetic material, consists of nuclear envelope (with pores) and nucleolus.
Nuclear envelope
Serves as barrier between nucleus and cytoplasm, consists of two lipid bilayer membrane with pores.
Nuclear pores
Found on the nuclear envelope, allows passage and diffusion of small molecules and ions in or out of the nucleus.
Nucleoplasm
Viscous fluids found within nucleus
Nucleolus
Produce and assemble ribosomes, also where ribosomal RNA genes are transcribed
Cytoplasm
Gel-like fluid found within cell, holds organelles and protects
Vacuole
Organelle where food, water, and waste is stored.
Golgi apparatus
Transports, sorts, and modifies both proteins and lipids (by adding carbohydrates). It packages proteins into membrane-bound vesicles before sending to their destination.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
Organelle which is studded with ribosomes, folds and packages proteins and sends these to the Golgi Apparantus.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
Not bound by ribosomes. Synthesizes lipids, including cholesterol and phospholipids, used in the production of new cellular membrane.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Responsible for folding protein molecules into sacs called CISTERNAE. Involved in protein photosynthesis and processing in cell.
