What was life like for Europeans after the fall of the Roman Empire?
Dangerous and very difficult with a decline in trade, learning, and government.
What advancements in farming helped peasants during the feudal period?
Iron, horses, and field rotation.
How did feudalism help the people of Europe?
Brought order with social hierarchy, protection, new farming methods, and trade.
How were Christians persuaded to participate in the Crusades?
They believed the pope was connected to Christ and it would help them achieve salvation.
What is the Reconquista and how did it affect Spain?
The driving of Muslims and Jews from Spain in the name of religious tolerance, leading to less cultural growth.
What did the Crusaders learn about other parts of the world?
They learned there were cities around the world that were more advanced than theirs.
What were some positive effects of the Crusades?
Increase in trade and a wider view of the world.
What were some negative effects of the Crusades?
Murder of Muslims and Jews, the Reconquista, and increased power struggle between monarch and church.
How did the rest of the world view the Ottomans?
They felt threatened by them.
What helped the Ottomans successfully lead non-Muslim people?
They organized them into communities.
What are some differences between the Ottomans and Safavids?
Safavids were from Iran, Shiite and more tolerant of non-Muslims; Ottomans were from Turkey, Sunni, and more threatening.
Why was Abbas the Great considered a great ruler for the Safavids?
He encouraged non-Muslims to contribute and used both military strength and diplomacy.
Why was Suleiman considered a great ruler for the Ottomans?
He created councils and was willing to work with other leaders.
How did class divisions work in the Ottoman empire?
Classes had appointed roles but could always work in the military.
