Members of the jury, I will now instruct you on the law. You must decipher the facts based solely on the evidence provided in the courtroom today. I must remind you, to find Mr. Scopes guilty, you must find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Some say the country is simply changing. Cities grow, new ideas spread. Is this necessarily bad and should it be blocked from public schools? . . . It’s true that many believe moral decline is closely connected to the rapid pace of urbanization and the social changes that followed the gilded Age. This concern is reflected in the rise of flappers, ho symbolized the new women, and in the increase of alcohol consumption and bootlegging following prohibition. To critics, these developments represented widespread corruption, despite prohibitions attempts to reform and clean up society.
3rd long
Critics say modern ideas abandon religion. Is that fair? . . . Some Americans, like blank here, fear that censorship will hurt individual freedoms, similar to the limiting of free speech. It is also important to note that you can accept science and still believe in God. Some Americans are optimistic about social changes and are becoming more globally aware. In short, modernists are questions whether we belong to the future or to fear, and whether knowledge should be explored or controlled.
