1803

Purchased for $15 million from France

Provisional Gains

1. Removed European control.

Convention of 1818

Trade land: negotiated between the U.S and Britain

Provisional Gains:

1. Britain honored U.S dishing rights in Atlantic

2. Recognized the 49th parallel as a boundary between Louisiana Territory and Canda

3. Occupied the Oregon Territory jointly with the U,S

Spanish-Florida

1819

Negotiation with Spain over land

Provisional Gains:

1. Doubled the size of the U.S after gaining Florida setting a precedent for the Adams-Onis Treaty and in response the U.S recognized Spain’s claims to Texas

Missouri Compromise 

1820

Admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, preventing slavery in the Louisiana Territory under the 36 30 parallell. 

Aimed to maintain the balance of power between slave and free states.

Texas Annexation

1844

Texas was admitted to the Union after declaring independence from Mexico in 1836 and seeking U.S. annexation.

It had recognized the U.S claims to the Oregon Territory but led to future border disputes along the Rio Grande River contributing to the Mexican-American War.
