Shoulder Girdle
Consists of the clavicle, scapula, and humerus; connects the upper limb to the trunk.
Clavicle
A long bone that articulates with the acromion of the scapula at the acromioclavicular joint and with the manubrium of the sternum at the sternoclavicular joint.
Scapula
A flat bone that forms the posterior portion of the shoulder girdle, triangular in shape with anterior (costal) and posterior (dorsal) surfaces.
Acromioclavicular (AC) joint
A synovial gliding joint that connects the acromion of the scapula to the lateral end of the clavicle.
Sternoclavicular (SC) joint
A synovial double-gliding joint that connects the sternal end of the clavicle with the manubrium of the sternum.
Scapulohumeral (glenohumeral) joint
A synovial ball-and-socket joint that allows for all types of shoulder movements.
Articulation
The area where two bones connect, allowing for movement and support of structure.
Glenoid cavity
The shallow depression in the scapula that articulates with the head of the humerus.
Acromion
The lateral extension of the scapular spine that forms the highest point of the shoulder.
Coracoid process
A small hook-like structure on the scapula that serves as an attachment point for muscles and ligaments.
