Non-Negotiable Coercive Force
A force that law enforcement is uniquely granted the right to use, which includes actions to manipulate or batter.
How much force can be used?
Force applied should be one step above the force being displayed by the suspect.
Verbal Forceful (Warning)
The use of strong verbal instructions intended to warn or control a situation.
Physical Force
The use of physical actions, ranging from passive control to active intervention.
Baton
A type of weapon used by police that can be swung, poked, or used to block and apply pressure to nerve points.
Pepper Spray
A chemical spray used in law enforcement, containing varying percentages of pepper (OC) for incapacitating suspects.
Taser
Less than lethal device used by police that can be fatal to individuals with heart conditions.
Deadly Force
Force that can result in death; can be used to stop felons, but must comply with legal standards set by court rulings.
TN v Garner (1985)
Supreme Court case that ruled police can only use deadly force to prevent imminent danger to themselves or others.
