Arm
The portion of the microscope that connects the body to the base; functions as a handle for carrying the microscope.
Base
The stable bottom of the microscope; sits directly on the lab table; one hand should be placed under the base when carrying.
Body Tube
The round tube that joins the eyepiece with the objective lenses.
Course Adjustment
The large knob that moves the stage up and down to focus the specimen; used only on low and medium power.
Diaphragm
The disc found directly below the stage; controls the amount of light passing through the stage and onto the specimen.
Fine Adjustment
The small knob that makes the final adjustments in focus.
Light Source
Produces light to illuminate the specimen; depending on the type of bulb, it can get very hot.
Objectives
The 3 lenses attached to the revolving nosepiece; positioned directly above the specimen to be observed.
Ocular or Eyepiece
The lens at the viewing end of a microscope; sits on top of the body tube.
Revolving Nosepiece
The part of the microscope that allows you to switch back and forth between the different objectives.
Stage
A level platform positioned above the base of the microscope on which slides are placed.
Stage Clips
The clips on top of the stage that allow you to hold a microscope slide in position.
