Dan Shen
Nature: Bitter, Slightly Cold
Meridian: Heart, Pericardium, Liver
Action: (1) Invigorate blood, dispel stasis - Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain, heat-type bi syndrome with red, swollen and painful joints
(2) Clear blood, disperse abscess - Pathogenic heat entering the ying and blood aspect, sore, abscess, carbuncle and swelling
(3) Nourish heart, calm mind - Palpitation, insomnia
Dosage: 9-15g in decoction
Tao Ren
Nature: Bitter, Sweet, Neutral, Slightly Toxic
Meridian: Heart, Liver, Lung, Large Intestine
Action: (1) Invigorate blood, dispel stasis - Irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis, abdominal mass, traumatic injury, lung abscess, intestinal abscess
(2) Moisten the intestine, relax the bowel - Constipation due to intestinal dryness
Dosage: 6-10g used in decoction, smash before use. Contraindicated for pregnancy. Caution with loose stool and avoid over use
Hong Hua
Nature: Pungent, Warm
Meridian: Heart, Liver
Action: Invigorate blood, unblock meridians, dispel blood stasis, alleviate pain - Dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to stasis, chest and abdominal pain due to blood stasis, abdominal mass, traumatic injury
Dosage: 3-10g used in decoction. Contraindicated for pregnancy. Caution with tendendcy of bleeding
Yi Mu Cao
Nature: Pungent, Bitter, Slightly Cold
Meridian: Heart, Liver, Bladder
Action: (1) Invigorate blood, Dispel stasis - Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain, traumatic injury
(2) Induce diuresis, alleviate emema - inhibited urination, edema
(3) Clear heat, relieve detoxity - Sore, abscess, itching rashes
Dosage: 10-15g in decoction. Contraindicated for pregnancy. Caution with blood deficiency without blood stasis
Ze Lan
Nature: Pungent, Bitter, Slightly Warm
Meridian: Liver, Spleen
Action: (1) Invigorate blood, dispel stasis - Amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, postpartum abdominal pain, traumatic injury, chest and hypochondriac pain, incised wound, sores and boils
(2) Induce diuresis, alleviate edema - inhibited urination, edema
Dosage: 10-15g in decoction. Caution with blood deficiency without blood stasis
Niu Xi
Nature: Bitter, Sour, Neutral
Meridian: Liver, Kidney
Action: (1) Invigorate blood, dispel stasis - Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain, traumatic injury
(2) Tonify liver and kidney, strengthen sinew and bone - Pain and lack of strength in the lumbar region and knees
(3) Induce diuresis, relieve strangury - Hematuria, dribbling urination
(4) Conduct blood, fire downward - Hematemesis, epistaxis, toothache, oral and tongue ulcer, headache, dizziness, difficult delivery
Dosage: 6-15g in decoction. Contraindicated for profuse menstruation and pregnancy
Ji Xue Teng
Nature: Bitter, Slightly Sweet, Warm
Meridian: Liver
Action: (1) Move blood, nourish blood - Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea
(2) Relax sinews, activate collaterals - Wind damp bi syndrome
Dosage: 10-15g in decoction. Caution with profuse menstruation
Wang Bu Liu Xing
Nature: Bitter, Neutral
Meridian: Liver, Stomach
Action: (1) Invigorate, unblock meridians - Dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea
(2) Promote lactation - Agalactia, mastitis
Dosage: 6-10g in decoction. Contraindicated for pregnancy
