absolute deviation
The absolute value of a deviation.
balance point
The value where all points on a number line are balanced.
bar graph
A graph that displays categorical data using horizontal or vertical bars.
box-and-whisker plot
A graph that displays the five-number summary of a data set.
categorical data
Data that fits into exactly one of several categories.
circle graph
A graph that displays categorical data using sectors of a circle.
clusters
Areas on a graph where data group closely together.
data
Categories, numbers, or observations gathered in response to a statistical question.
deviation
Indicates how far a data value is from the mean.
distribution
The overall shape of a graph showing how data is spread out.
dot plot
A data display that shows discrete data on a number line.
experiment
A method of collecting data through imposed conditions and observation of results.
frequency
The number of times an item or number occurs in a data set.
gaps
Areas of a graph where there are no data.
grouped frequency table
A table used to organize data by how many times data values with a given range occur.
histogram
A graphical way to display quantitative data using vertical bars.
interquartile range (IQR)
The difference between the first and third quartiles.
mean
The arithmetic average of the numbers in a data set.
mean absolute deviation
The average of the absolute deviations.
measure of center
Tells how data values cluster or the location of the center of the data.
measure of variation
Describes the spread of data values.
median
The middle number in a data set when arranged in order.
mode
The value that occurs most frequently in a data set.
observational study
Collecting data by observing the variable of interest.
outliers
Data values that lie a large distance from other data in a graph.
peaks
Values on a graph that contain more data points than those on either side.
population
An entire set of items from which data is collected.
quantitative data
Quantitative data, or numeric data, are data you can place on a numeric scale and compare.
quartiles
Values that describe variation in a data set by splitting data into quarters.
range
The difference between the maximum and minimum values of a data set.
sample
A selection from a population.
skewed left distribution
A distribution where the peak is on the right side and few data points are to the left.
skewed right distribution
A distribution where the peak is on the left side and few data points are to the right.
statistical process
Includes formulating questions, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting results.
statistical question
A question that anticipates answers based on variable data.
stem-and-leaf plot
A graphical method to represent ordered numeric data.
survey
A method of collecting data by asking people questions.
symmetric distribution
A distribution where the left and right halves of a graph are mirror images.
uniform distribution
A distribution where data is spread equally across the range.
variability
The property that the value of the attribute being studied can change.
