Region
A geographical unit which shares some unifying principle, whether cultural, economic, or based on a pattern/activity.
Formal Region (Uniform or Homogenous Region)
A geographical area linked by common traits like language, religion, economic prosperity, or a geographical feature.
Functional Region (Nodal Region)
A region organized not based on shared traits but on a shared function, characterized by a central location or node around which the activity is carried out.
Perceptual Region (Vernacular Region)
A region defined by people's shared beliefs and feelings about themselves and their surroundings; boundaries are vague and exist in the minds of the inhabitants.
Transitional Boundaries
Boundaries of formal and functional regions that are not hard lines, but areas of transition.
Contested Boundaries
Boundaries of regions that are the subject of disputes.
