To subtract an integer, add its opposite. This means change the subtraction sign to an addition sign and change the sign of the second number to its opposite.

Examples

  • 5 - 3 becomes 5 + (-3) = 2

  • 5 - (-3) becomes 5 + (+3) = 8

  • -5 - 3 becomes -5 + (-3) = -8

  • -5 - (-3) becomes -5 + (+3) = -2
