How do you subtract integers?
To subtract an integer, add its opposite. This means change the subtraction sign to an addition sign and change the sign of the second number to its opposite.
Examples
5 - 3 becomes 5 + (-3) = 2
5 - (-3) becomes 5 + (+3) = 8
-5 - 3 becomes -5 + (-3) = -8
-5 - (-3) becomes -5 + (+3) = -2
