Physical Geography
The study of the Earth's systems and how they interact, including the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere.
Earth as a Closed System
A concept indicating that Earth mainly contains subsystems with limited inputs and outputs, primarily receiving energy from the sun.
Subsystems
Components within a larger system that interact and function together, such as the officials and infrastructure in a football game.
Atmosphere
The layer of gases surrounding the Earth, crucial for regulating temperature and providing air for breathing.
Hydrosphere
The combined mass of water found on, under, and above the surface of a planet, which on Earth is unique for its abundance of liquid water.
Geosphere
The solid Earth, consisting of rock and sediment, interacting with other Earth systems.
Biosphere
The global sum of all ecosystems, where life exists and interacts with other Earth systems.
Ozone Layer
A region of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation, composed of ozone (O3).
Carbon Cycle
The process by which carbon is exchanged among the atmosphere, land, water, and living organisms, helping maintain Earth's equilibrium.
Coriolis Effect
The effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation.
Gaia Hypothesis
The idea that Earth functions as a single self-regulating system, where biological and inorganic components interact to maintain conditions for life.
Faint Sun Paradox
The observation that, despite the sun's increasing luminosity over geological time, Earth's temperature has remained stable due to a decrease in atmospheric CO2.
Hydroxyl Radical (OH)
A molecule in the atmosphere that helps to cleanse the air by breaking down pollutants.
Magnetosphere
The region around Earth dominated by its magnetic field, which protects the planet from the solar wind.
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods with the help of sunlight.
Electrical Field
An effect created by charged particles that can influence the behavior of other charged particles.
