Biceps brachii

This muscle lies on the outer thigh and extends the knee.
Vastus lateralis

This muscle lies on the inner thigh and extends the knee.
Vastus medialis

This muscle is on the back of the thigh and helps flex the knee and extend the hip.
Biceps femoris

This hamstring muscle is medial and extends the hip while flexing the knee.
Semitendinosus

This hamstring muscle lies deep and medial; it also extends the hip and flexes the knee.
Semimembranosus

This muscle runs down the front of the shin and flexes the foot upward (dorsiflexion).
Tibialis anterior

This calf muscle forms the bulge of the lower leg and points the toes (plantar flexion).
Gastrocnemius

This muscle lies deep to the gastrocnemius and assists in plantar flexion.
Soleus

This muscle is on the lateral side of the lower leg and everts the foot.
