Interphase
The longest stage of the cell cycle where the cell performs normal functions and prepares for division by copying its genetic material.
Mitosis
The process of cell division that results in two genetically identical daughter cells.
Prophase
The first phase of mitosis where DNA condenses into visible chromosomes and the nuclear membrane dissolves.
Metaphase
The stage in mitosis where double stranded chromosomes line up at the cell's equator, and spindle fibers attach to them.
Anaphase
The phase where the centromere splits, sister chromatids separate, and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell.
Telophase
The stage of mitosis where daughter chromosomes stretch out and a nuclear membrane forms around each set.
Cytokinesis
The process that follows mitosis, dividing the cytoplasm to produce two identical daughter cells.
Daughter Chromosomes
Single stranded chromosomes formed from the separation of sister chromatids during anaphase.
Cell Growth and Repair
The main purposes of cell division through the process of mitosis.
Differences in Cytokinesis
In plant cells, a cell wall plate develops, while in animal cells, a furrow forms to split the cell.
