process in which stereotype will be activated

The extent to which a person’s characteristics matches those typical for their social group
Situational Context
Tendency to emphasize one category over another based environment

The need to see oneself in a positive light

Belief that oneself is unbiased and make efforts to be seen that way

people are motivated to inhibit application based on if person is high in cognition, comfort, or closure

Cognitive busyness
If the mind is busy during activation, it will prevent taking notice of the stereotype present
Social Power
People who have power/status are more prone to using stereotypes
Biased behavior
Ambiguous behavior will be interpreted as typical of ones social group
Shooter bias
tendency for cops to shoot black people more and incorrectly identify harmless object as a gun
Biased evaluation
evaluation of a groups qualifications, culture is seen as negative
Self-fulfilling prophecy
People behaving according to preconceived though, in doing so, that makes their expectation a reality
Ego defensive function
protection against self-concept against external threats
Subtyping Model
Sorting people into subgroups of a stereotype in order to keep overarching stereotype from changing
Concentrated disconfirmation
When there are only a few people discrete with the stereotype
Dispersed disconfirmation
when a group of stereotype are discrete with the stereotype

avoiding situations we are uncomfortable in

people desire to guard against the possibility that they appear bias
