UPPER EPIDERMIS
top layer of cells in a leaf
CUTICLE
fatty/waxy coating on outer surface of leaf; prevents evaporation of water from the plant tissues
PALISADE MESOPHYLL
a tightly packed layer of cells in the mesophyll; this layer gets lots of exposure to the sun and the cells contain many chloroplast; lots of photosynthesis happens here
CHLOROPLAST
organelle in plant cell where photosynthesis occurs; contains the pigment chlorophyll which absorbs energy from the sun
XYLEM
tubes within the vascular bundle which transport water
PHLOEM
tubes within the vascular bundle which transport sugar
GUARD CELL
cells which border the stomata and regulate the opening and closing of the stomata
STOMA
an opening on the underside of a leaf; diffusion of gases in and out of the leaf occurs through the stomata
MESOPHYLL
the middle of the leaf
SPONGY MESOPHYLL
a loosely-packed layer of cells in the mesophyll; space around the cells is used for storing gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen
LOWER EPIDERMIS
bottom layer of cells
VEIN/VASCULAR BUNDLE
a collection of tubes that transport materials throughout the leaf and plant
