Antifederalists
favored state gov. and feared a strong national gov.

1st attempt at a new American gov. Later known as the constitution.

First 10 amendmands to the consitution, they protect individual rights and liberties.
Commerce Clause
Power to regulate commerce among several states
Consent of the Goverened
Gov. gains legitimacy through elections by people living under that gov.
Eneumerated Powers
Powers explicitly granted to Congress, the President, or the Supreme Court
Executive Powers Clause
The executive power shall be secured with the President.
Federalist
An individual who favores strong national gov. and a system of separated powers.
Federalist Papers
Series of 85 essays written to help ratify the U.S Constitution.
Great Compromise
Agreement that American gov. would have 2 houses in Congress
Impeachment
Power to the branches that allows Congress to remove the Vice/President, or others.
Implied Powers
Powers supported by the Constitution that are not expressively stated in it.
Judicial Review
Supreme Court power to strike down a low or executive branch action that seems unconstitutional.
Limited gov.
Power of gov. are restricted to prevent tyranny.
Monarchy
One person or monarch is in charge through inheritance
National Supremacy Clause
Article VI, 2, states: The constitution, laws, or treaties of the U.S are the “Supreme Law of the Land”
-National Laws take precedence over state laws if state creates conflict.
Natural Rights
“Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”
Necessary and Proper Clause
Article I,8 Grants Congress power to pass all laws related to its expressed powers. (Elastic Clause)
New Jersey Plan

Powers that are not given to the National gov. can be reserved to the states by the Constitution
Virginia Plan
Gathering of mostly larger states to declare representation based off of populations.
