What is the basic principle of expanding single brackets?
Multiply each term inside the bracket by the term outside the bracket.
Expand 4(x + 6).
4x + 24.
Expand -3(2x - 5).
-6x + 15.
Expand x(3x + 7).
3x^2 + 7x.
Expand -2x(5 - x).
-10x + 2x^2.
What does the FOIL method stand for in expanding double brackets?
First, Outer, Inner, Last.
Expand (x + 1)(x + 4).
x^2 + 5x + 4.
Expand (x - 2)(x + 5).
x^2 + 3x - 10.
Expand (2x + 3)(x - 1).
2x^2 + x - 3.
Expand (3x - 2)(2x + 4).
6x^2 + 10x - 8.
What is factorising?
Breaking down an expression into a product of simpler expressions (factors) that multiply to give the original expression.
Why do we factorise expressions?
To simplify expressions, solve equations, find common factors, and make algebra easier.
What is the first step in factorising most expressions?
Look for and factor out the Greatest Common Factor (GCF).
Factorise 6x3+9x26x^3
3x2 (2x+3)3x^2
