Magna Carta
document signed on June 15, 1215 forcing King John that to raise taxes, he had to consult a group of nobles and clergy. it gave English people protection against unjust treatment or punishment. even kings and queens were bound by this law
Representative Government
all 13 colonies had some kind of representative government or assembly. a form of government in which people elect delegates to make laws and conduct government. English parliament was a representative assembly
English Bill of Rights
stated that the ruler could not suspend Parliament’s laws, impose taxes, or raise an army without Parliament’s consent. also banned cruel and unusual punishments. gave people the right to a fair trial with a jury.
Militia
a military force made up of ordinary citizens. George Washington was selected to lead one to drive out the French.
The French and Indian War
progressed from the conflict between the British and the French. won by the British. the french fired against fort necessity and GW surrendered.
Proclamation of 1763
an order that prohibited colonists from living west of the Appalachian Mountains. offered peace between Native Americans and settlers, kept colonists near the Atlantic coast, allowed Britain to control westward expansion and the fur trade in the region. salutary neglect is when the British government ignored the colonies on purpose.
Sugar Act
lowered the tax on the molasses the colonists imported. also allowed officers to seize goods from accused smugglers without going to court, was an indirect tax
Stamp Act
a law that taxed almost all printed materials such as newspapers, wills, and playing cards, was a direct tax
Townshend Acts
a tax to imported goods such as glass, tea and paper. the tax was paid when the goods arrived before they were brought into the colonies, indirect tax. the British eventually repealed the acts
Writs of Assistance
document that allowed officers to search almost anywhere for smuggled goods without a warrant

colonists who called for resistance to British rule, a group used in earlier protests who were “revived” by Sam Adams, circulated against calls for action against Britain, brought together protesters opposed to British measures

The East India Company shipped unwanted tea to the colonies, so the sons of liberty dressed as Indians and threw the tea overboard. a method of protest

laws that expressed the feeling of colonists towards the coercive acts, they were passed to force Boston to pay for the tea they threw overboard
