A philosophical movement individualism, independent thinking, and challenging authority, advocating for human rights and the scientific method. Intellectual and ideological context of revolutions
How Enlightenment challenged the status quo?
Challenged the role of religion by questioning authority of higher power; natural rights; Social contract encouraged people to overthrow a tyrannical government; popular sovereignty power to rule belong to the people, democracy-all people participate in government, liberalism- protection of civil rights, private property, and free market trade
What effect of Enlightenment allowed more people to participate in government?
expansion of suffrage after American revolution - while only white land owning males could vote eventually all white males then black males could too
Impact of the the enlightenment on women?
Feminist Movement- call for women’s suffrage and equality; Wollstonecraft- education for women (example how Enlightenment affected societies over times)
