Sensory input

The process of gathering information through sensory receptors monitoring stimuli.

Integration

The nervous system's process of interpreting sensory input and deciding if action is needed.

Motor output

The response or effect that activates muscles or glands.

Central Nervous System (CNS)

The part of the nervous system that includes the brain and spinal cord, functioning as the command center.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

Nerves extending from the brain and spinal cord that serve as communication lines among sensory organs, the brain, and muscles or glands.

Sensory (afferent) division

Nerve fibers that carry information to the central nervous system.

Motor (efferent) division

Nerve fibers that carry impulses away from the central nervous system to effector organs.

Somatic nervous system

The part of the motor division that is voluntary and controls skeletal muscles.

Autonomic nervous system

The part of the motor division that is involuntary and controls smooth and cardiac muscles and glands.

Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems

The two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system, involved in involuntary control.
