Harlem Renaissance

A cultural movement that celebrated African American art, music, and culture in New Renaissance

York City. It also had a political element to improve civil rights.

Louis Armstrong

Famous trumpeter and jazz musician of the Harlem Renaissance. He was well known Armstrong

for starting scat singing as a part of jazz.

Duke Ellington

Famous band leader who regularly performed at the Cotton Club during the Harlem

Renaissance. He refused to perform in front of segregated crowds as a form of protest.

Langston Hughes

Well known poet from the Harlem Renaissance who pushed for civil rights by talking Hughes

about the everyday experiences of African Americans.

Tulsa Race Massacre

Race riot that began in Tulsa, OK that destroyed the Greenwood neighborhood. The

incident was suppressed by local police and newspapers.

Chicago Race Riot

Deadly conflict over housing in Chicago that began after the death of Eugene Williams. Riot

It showed the tensions over housing as people moved North as a part of the Great Migration.

Herbert Hoover

Promised the American people prosperity and attempted to first deal with the

Depression by trying to restore public faith in the community. He did not originally ofer help from the Federal Government.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

President of the United States during most of the Depression and most of World War II. Roosevelt

Began the New Deal and government assistance to aid the American People. Was criticized for expanding government power and his actions during World War II.

Bank Run

Widespread panic in which great numbers of people try to redeem their paper money

causing banks to close

Stock Market

A system for buying and selling stocks in corporations

Speculation

An involvement in risky business transactions in an efort to make a quick or large

profit.

Buying on Margin

Borrowing money from a bank to buy stocks. It can lead to large payofs only if you Margin

make money on the investment.

Hoovervilles

Depression shantytowns, named after the president whom many blamed for their

financial distress

Dust Bowl

Region of the Great Plains that experienced a drought in 1930 lasting for a decade,

leaving many farmers without work or substantial wages.

Dorothea Lange

American photographer who recorded the Great Depression by taking pictures of the

unemployed and rural poor.

Installment Plan

A payment plan that allows customers to make payments at set intervals over a period

of time until the total debt is paid. Led to less buying in the 1920s and false prosperity.

Overproduction

One of the causes of the great depression. A condition in which production of goods exceeds the demand for them

Bull Market

A period of increased stock trading and rising stock prices

Hoboes

These men roamed the country, hopped on freight cars, and went wherever they could find a job. Sometimes they had to beg for food.

Black Blizzards

Great dust storms that swept across the plains, blotting out the sun and sufocating

livestock as well as people

New Deal

The name given to FDR's massive plan for relief, recovery, and reform. It created

alphabet agencies to help end the Great Depression.

Okies

Name given to migrants fleeing the Dust Bowl to western states.

Talks given by FDR over the radio to explain government policies in a reassuring,

informative fashion
