Repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm

AAA

Surgical repair of a weakening/ballooning area of the abdominal portion of the aorta

Anterior cervical fusion

ACF

Surgical fusion of vertebrae in the cervical spine, approached from the side of the patients body

Anterior cruciate ligament

ACL

Reconstruction of repairing of the anterior cruciate ligament. In an ACL reconstruction, a graft is used to replace the ligament. In an ACL Repair, the torn ligament is put back together

Above the knee amputation

AKA

Surgical removal of the leg above the knee

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion

ALIF

Spinal surgery in which bone grafts/implants are used to fuse the vertebrae in the lumbar spine; approached from the front of the patient’s body

Arteriovenous graft

AV Graft

Surgical connection made between an artery and a vein to allow hemodialysis access

Below the knee amputation

BKA

Surgical removal of the leg below the knee

Bilateral myringotomy with tubes

BMT

Incision into both sides of the eardrum for drainage via tube placement

Bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy

BSO

Surgical removal of both fallopian tubes and ovaries

CABG

Creation of a new blood supply to an area of the heart with a clogged/blocked artery using the patient’s own blood vessel to function as the graft

Dilation of the uterine cervix and scraping of the inner lining

EGD

Endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract up to the duodenum

ESS

Use of endoscopic instrumentation to operate on the nose

Examination under anesthesia

EUA

The use of anesthesia to conduct a surgical examination of a sensitive part of the body

Incision and drainage

I&D

Incision into and drainage of pus/fluid from an abscess, boil, wound or infected area of the body

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator

ICD

Insertion/implantation of a battery-powered device that can deliver a jolt of electricity to treat cardiac arrhythmia

Intramedullary nail

IMN

Insertion/implantation of a nail or rod into the medullary cavity of a long bone, such as the femur or tibia

Intraocular lens

IOL

Insertion/implantation of a lens within the eye to treat cataracts

Intraoperative radiation therapy

IORT

Use of therapeutic levels of radiation to treat exposed cancer tumors during surgery; frequently done during breast surgery

Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy

LAVH

A visualization and treatment of pelvic organs, followed by removal of the uterus through the vagina

A visual examination of the larynx and the bronchi

LP

A collection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for diagnostic of therapeutic purposes, commonly referred to as a spinal tap

Surgical removal of healthy epidermis and portions of dermis (skin) that is as a skin graft elsewhere on the body

Surgical removal of the uterus through an incision in the abdomen

TEE

Ultrasound image of the heart by using a probe/transducer inserted into the esophagus

Total hip arthroplasty

Hip joint reconstruction by removing the bone and placing an implant in the hip socket, as well as the femoral head (the proximal femur), resulting in a completely rebuilt joint

TKA

Knee joint reconstruction by placing implants, resulting in a completely rebuilt joint

TURP

Surgical removal of part of the prostate gland by inserting instruments across the urethra to reach the prostate internally

Use of endoscopic instruments to access the chest cavity, lungs or thorax

Surgical placement of a drain (shunt) to transfer excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain (ventricle) to the abdominal lining (peritoneum)

A treatment that applies gentle suction to a wound to help it heal
