Certified

Evaluated and recognized as meeting the minimum standards to provide safe care

Community paramedicine

Health care model where experienced paramedics receive advanced training to provide additional services outside the hospital (health evaluations, monitoring chronic illnesses)

Continuous quality improvement (CQI)

Reviews and audits of the EMS system to identify areas of improvement and assign remedial training

Credentialing

Verification process of a health care provider’s qualifications (can perform fewer or additional techniques in their area or work in certain types of care systems)

Emergency medical dispatch (EMD)

System that helps dispatchers choose appropriate units (police, ambulance, firefighters) to respond to emergencies. Gives callers instructions until EMS arrives

Licensure

Process where a competent authority (ex state) allows people to perform a regulated act

Medical control

Physician instructions given directly (online, radio/phone) or indirectly (offline, standing orders)

Medical director

The physician who authorizes the EMT to provide medical care in the field

Mobile integrated health care (MIH)

Delivering healthcare within the community instead of in the hospital

AEMT

EMR
