IEEE Standard for Ethernets
802.3 is a set of standards defining the physical layer and media access control (MAC) of wired Ethernet networks, including specifications for cabling and signaling.
Twisted Pair cable
A type of cabling that consists of pairs of wires twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference. Commonly used in networking for both voice and data transmission. 10Gbps or more at 10 meters
Coaxial Cable
A type of electrical cable that consists of a central conductor, insulating layer, metallic shield, and outer insulation, commonly used for cable television and internet connections.
UTP
A type of twisted pair cable that is widely used in networking due to its affordability and ease of installation. UTP cabling minimizes interference and is commonly used for Ethernet connections.
STP
A type of twisted pair cabling that includes a shield around each pair of wires to further reduce electromagnetic interference, enhancing performance in networking applications.
CAT5
100 Mbps
CAT5e
Enhanced version of CAT5. 1Gbps
CAT6
1 Gbps - 100m
10 Gbps - 55m
CAT6a
10 Gbps - 100 m
CAT7
10 Gbps
CAT8
up to 40 Gbps
RG-6
support faster internet speeds when using a cable modem. 1Gbps at 300m
RG-59
analog video and closed circuit television installations
DAC
Direct attached copper → used to connect switches to routers to servers. 100Gbps at 15 meters active. and 7 meters passive
Plenum
used to prevent flames from spreading using materials like PVC. mainly used in buildings with heating ventilation.
Non-plenum
used in less stringent fire safety. non-air spaces
