Kinetic Particle Theory of Matter
A model that describes the arrangement, movement and energy of particles in a substance.
Solid
A state of matter with very close particles arranged in a regular pattern, vibrating around a fixed position, and having low energy.
Liquid
A state of matter with close particles that are randomly arranged, moving around each other, and having greater energy than solids.
Gas
A state of matter with far apart particles that are randomly arranged, moving quickly in all directions, and having the highest energy.
Particle Arrangement in Solids
Very close and in a regular pattern.
Particle Movement in Solids
Vibrate around a fixed position.
Energy of Particles in Solids
Low energy.
Particle Arrangement in Liquids
Close and randomly arranged.
Particle Movement in Liquids
Move around each other.
Energy of Particles in Liquids
Greater energy than solids.
Particle Arrangement in Gases
Far apart and randomly arranged.
Particle Movement in Gases
Move quickly in all directions.
Energy of Particles in Gases
Highest energy.
Properties of Solids
Have a fixed volume and a fixed shape, cannot flow, and cannot be compressed.
Properties of Liquids
Have a fixed volume but no fixed shape, can flow and take the shape of their container, and cannot be easily compressed.
Properties of Gases
Have no fixed shape or volume, can flow and completely fill their container, and can be compressed.
