Anaerobic cellular respiration

Key concept 3: Anarobic cellular respiration produces a small amount ATP in the absence of oxy.

Without oxygen NADH and FADH2 cannot get rid of their electrons. What is the result of this?

Krebs cycle and electron transport stop.

* No NAD for glycolysis

What happens instead to create NAD in animals and plants?

Lactic acid fermentation occurs in animals and alchohal fermentation occurs in plants and yeast.

What does lactic acid do?

* causes muscle cramps
* when oxygen becomes available lactic acid is converted back to pyruvate.
* pyruvate continues to krebs cycle

What happens with sustained lack of oxygen?

2ATP from glycolysis is not enough --> Cell Death

where does anaerobic respiration occur?

Cytoplasm

what do metabolic poisons do?

* Interfere with ETC
* Stops stages of cellular respiration

(ex. cyanide, hydrogen sulfide etc.)
