Degrees of Hearing Loss
Categories that describe the severity of hearing impairments based on air conduction thresholds.
Normal hearing (Adult)
Defined as air conduction thresholds of 0-25 dB.
Normal hearing (Pediatric)
Defined as air conduction thresholds of 0-15 dB.
Mild hearing loss
Characterized by air conduction thresholds ranging from 26-40 dB.
Moderate hearing loss
Characterized by air conduction thresholds ranging from 41-55 dB.
Moderately-severe hearing loss
Characterized by air conduction thresholds ranging from 56-70 dB.
Severe hearing loss
Characterized by air conduction thresholds ranging from 71-90 dB.
Profound hearing loss
Characterized by air conduction thresholds of 91 dB or greater.
Air conduction thresholds
The measure used to determine the degree of hearing loss through sound waves traveling through the air.
Threshold mark
The point on a graph that indicates what sounds the patient can or cannot hear.
