New cards

Type X

A treated type of gypsum board that has added fire-resistant properties, allowing for flame spread to be slowed. Each layer of Type X that is used can provide an hour’s worth of resistance when rating a wall assembly (one layer is applicable for a one-hour rating, two layers for two hours, etc.)

2
New cards

Acoustical partition

Interior partition that features layers of sound batt to diminish noise from one room to another

3
New cards

Backbend

The framing members on either side of the throat with aids in connecting the frame to the wall

4
New cards

Bearing wall

A wall that supports the weight of the roof and upper levels, removal of these walls requires alternative support measures, includes exterior walls and certain interior walls

5
New cards

Casing

The exposed trim around a window or door, typically made of wood, metal, aluminum, or plastic

6
New cards

Chase walls

A wall constructed with enough width to conceal plumbing, typically 12” for fixtures on one side and 16” for fixtures on both sides

7
New cards

Cripple stud

A stud that has been shortened for use in supporting openings, these studs appear between the top plate and header, and between the bottom plate and a sill

8
New cards

Double rabbet

A door frame featuring two rabbets separated by a stop, where either side could contain the door

9
New cards

Double top plate

The use of two layers of nominal wood boards along the top of a stud wall to join the studs for a wall and support ceiling joists in wood-stud construction

10
New cards

Face

The portion of the frame that is visible on either side of the opening and acts as the trim, this can remain plain or be decorative

11
New cards

Frame

This assembly around a rough opening for a door or window that includes the jamb and the header

12
New cards

Greenboard

A treated type of gypsum board that has added water-resistant properties, allowing for its installation in spaces that are typically exposed to water, such as a bathroom. Should not be used alone and should be used under a layer of tiles, as it is not waterproof and can be damaged it if is overexposed to water.

13
New cards

Gypsum wallboard

A stacked element comprised of a gypsum core between layers of paper facing used as a surface material for walls and ceilings. Depending on the treatment or material makeup, it can take on various properties, such as water- or fire-resistance.

14
New cards

Head

A horizontal framework member that extends between studs to support the structure above in order to form an opening. The top-most element of a door or window

15
New cards

Header beam

A horizontal framework member that is installed directly below the top plate and extends between studs to support the structure above in order to form an opening. The header beam is created by rotating studs so that their widest dimension is parallel with the wall frame. Used in load-bearing light gauge steel walls

16
New cards

Header plate

A horizontal framework member that extends between king studs in a rough opening to support the structure above. May be used in conjunction with a header for a load bearing wall

17
New cards

Header

A horizontal framework member that is installed on top of a header plate and extends between studs to support the structure above in order to form an opening. The header is created by rotating a stud so that its widest dimension is parallel with the wall frame. Used in load-bearing, wood-frame walls.

18
New cards

Jack stud

A stud that has been shortened for use along the sides of openings. These studs are anchored to the king stud and help transfer weight from the header to the sole plate

19
New cards

Jamb

The vertical members of a frame for a window or door

20
New cards

King stud

A full-height stud that anchors from the bottom plate to the top plate and is attached to the header for support

21
New cards

Knockout

A hole cut in a steel stud, usually in an oval or square shape, that allows for wires to be run between studs

22
New cards

Nested double joint

A horizontal framework member that extends between king studs in a rough opening to support the structure above. This component is made of three steel channels, one to accept the cripple studs above and two interlocking channels below to support the weight. Used in conjunction with a header beam for load-bearing light gauge steel walls.

23
New cards

Nested header plate

An opening header created by stacking three steel channels in which the lower two channels face each other, with their flanges overlapping, creating a hollow, rectangular shape. The third, and topmost, channel rests above the nested components, facing upward to support the cripple studs above.

24
New cards

Nonbearing wall

A wall that acts as a space divider and does not bear the weight of the roof or upper levels, also known as a partition

25
New cards

Partition

A wall that acts as a space divider and does not bear the weight of the roof or upper levels, also known as a nonbearing wall

26
New cards

Rabbet

A groove or cut that creates a joint or space where another piece can fit into it

27
New cards

Rated partition

A wall constructed with fire-rated materials spanning from slab-to-slab

28
New cards

Rough opening

An opening created in the wall to allow for doors or windows to be placed. This opening measures 2” wider and taller than the door or window to be placed in the wall

29
New cards

Shim space

The 1/4”-1/2” gap created between a structural component and a finishing element for the placement of shims to aid in the leveling process

30
New cards

Shim

A wood or metal strip used to aid in leveling plates and frames between structural components and finishing elements

31
New cards

Sill

A horizontal member at the bottom of an elevated opening, such as a window

32
New cards

Single rabbet

A door frame featuring one rabbet that contains a door

33
New cards

Soffit (door)

The perpendicular edge to the stop on a door frame. This element can extend from the face to the stop (single rabbet) or can be sandwiched between rabbets (double rabbet).

34
New cards

Sole plate

A horizontal member along the bottom of a stud wall. This element joins the studs for the wall and acts as a support for floor joists. Also called the sill plate.

35
New cards

Steel channel

A C-shaped metal runner

36
New cards

Stop

An element of the door frame that extends into the path of the doorway to provide a closing point between the elements

37
New cards

Stud

A vertical framing member that has been mill cut to a specific size

38
New cards

Throat

The opening portion of a frame, which fits onto a wall. The size of the throat is dependent on the thickness of the wall

39
New cards

Top plate

A horizontal member along the top of a stud wall. This element joins the studs for the wall and acts as a support for ceiling joists
