What is the purpose of simple distillation?
To separate a liquid from a solution by evaporation and condensation.
What do you place in the distillation flask?
A solution like saltwater.
What equipment do you attach to the flask?
A thermometer and a condenser.
What happens when you heat the solution?
The liquid evaporates and turns into vapour.
What happens in the condenser?
The vapour cools and condenses back into a liquid.
Where is the distilled liquid collected?
In a separate beaker.
What is left in the distillation flask?
The solute (e.g. salt) that did not evaporate.
What condition must be true for simple distillation to work well?
The substances must have very different boiling points.
What safety precautions should you take?
Wear goggles, avoid sealing the system, and handle hot equipment safely.
