Intramolecular Forces
Forces that occur within a molecule, holding atoms together.
Intermolecular Forces
Forces that occur between molecules, influencing physical properties.
Ion-Dipole Force
An intermolecular force between an ion and a polar molecule.
Hydrogen Bonding
An extreme form of dipole-dipole interactions involving hydrogen and electronegative atoms.
Dipole-Dipole Interaction
Attraction between polar molecules due to permanent regions of polarity.
Dipole-Induced Dipole
Occurs when a polar molecule induces a dipole in a nonpolar molecule.
Induced Dipole-Induced Dipole (London Dispersion Forces)
Weak forces that result from temporary dipoles in molecules.
Polarizability
The degree to which an electron cloud can be distorted.
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a liquid turns into gas, influenced by intermolecular forces.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to mix with another substance, dependent on interactions.
Viscosity
The resistance of a liquid to flow; thicker liquids have higher viscosity.
Surface Tension
The force that causes liquid molecules to be pushed together at the surface.
Temporary Dipole
A short-lived dipole that occurs due to the movement of electrons.
Diffusion
The process of solute mixing with solvent; influenced by molecular interactions.
Functional Groups
Specific groups of atoms within molecules that determine chemical properties.
