When is the congiuntivo trapassato used?

It’s used like the past subjunctive, but when the verb in the main clause is in the past or conditional, and the action in the subordinate clause happened before that.

How do you form the congiuntivo trapassato?

Use the imperfect subjunctive of avere or essere + past participle.

Avere (with parlare)

io avessi parlato

tu avessi parlato

lui/lei avesse parlato

noi avessimo parlato

voi aveste parlato

loro avessero parlato

Essere (with parlare)

io fossi andato/a

tu fossi andato/a

lui/lei fosse andato/a

noi fossimo andati/e

What do you use if there's no change of subject?

Use di + [infinitive]

EX: Avevano bisogno di riciclare? → Did they need to recycle?
