Colonialism
The practice of establishing political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting its resources.
Ethnic Enclave
A neighborhood district or suburb with a high concentration of a particular ethnic group often due to migration patterns and cultural preferences.
Apartheid
A policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the South African government from 1948 to 1994.
Stateless Nation
A people without a country of their own.
Territoriality
A sense of property and attachment towards a group's land, reflecting a group's power and control over specific geographic spaces.
Sovereignty
The authority of a state to govern itself or another state.
Ethnicity
All the people united by a shared ancestral homeland and some cultural traits.
Self Determination
The concept that a nation has the right to govern themselves and choose their own political status.
Multiethnic Nation
A diverse state, one with more than one group of people within its borders.
Nation State
A politically organized territory with a permanent population, defined boundaries, and a government that exercises control over its internal and foreign affairs.
Imperialism
The extension of a nation's power and influence through diplomacy or military force often to acquire territory or establish economic, political, or cultural dominance.
Shatterbelt
A region caught between powerful forces whose boundaries are continually redefined, often experiencing conflict as a result.
Nation
A group of people with common cultural characteristics, often including language, ethnicity, and historical experiences.
Political Geography
The field of geography that deals with the study of political entities, their borders, and the relationships between the government and the people.
Multistate Nation
A nation that stretches across borders and across states.
